How we test the fineness of gold
Three steps, always in this order. You watch each one.
- The hallmark750 means: 750 parts out of 1000 are gold.
- The touchstoneThe colour of the streak shows which range the fineness falls into.
- The acidIf the hallmark and the streak don't match, this is what decides. It's the streak that's tested, not your piece.
Gold hallmarks 999, 750, 585: what they mean
The number in the hallmark is the fineness in thousandths.

What we don't buy
Bring it along anyway. You can't be sure of the difference just by looking at it.
Gold-plated
A coating just a few thousandths of a millimetre thick. The gold in it weighs too little.
Costume jewellery
No precious metal at all, even if it looks golden and feels heavy in the hand.
Rolled gold
A rolled-on layer of gold over a base-metal core. Thicker than gold-plating, but still too thin.

Do I need to sort or clean it beforehand?
No. Sorting is done at the table, by fineness. Cleaning doesn't change the weight of the gold.
How can I tell whether there's any gold in it at all?
Not reliably at home. A hallmark can be missing or wrong. That's why we test with a touchstone and, if necessary, acid before doing any calculation. This costs nothing.
Do I need ID?
Yes. The Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA) requires identification. Please bring an identity card, a passport or a foreign national's ID.
